Introduction
Library resources on the Berkeley campus of the University of California
are rich, varied, physically dispersed, and administratively decentralized.
There are two major types of libraries on campus: The University Library system and The Affiliated Libraries. The university library system includes Doe/Moffitt and the branch libraries, and collectively is known as The Library.
The ten Affiliated Libraries contain significant campus collections. University of California Office of the President (UCOP) statistics (2003-04) show that 17% of total volumes and 29% of currently received serials in UC Berkeley libraries are held by Affiliated Libraries.
Organization, Services and Access Policies
The Affiliated libraries are typically connected to particular departments, professional schools, or organized research institutes. These libraries are administratively separate from The Library system and from each other. The primary mission of the Affiliated Libraries is to support the teaching
and research needs of their respective organizations. Their collections reflect these specialized concerns.
The Affiliated Libraries have developed in-depth subject emphases and may use their own subject headings and classification schemes. Some of the Affiliated Libraries collections are currently represented in the University's Melvyl catalog, in The Library's OskiCat catalog, or both. To fully utilize the Affiliated Libraries' collections, consult the Holdings and Circulation of the Affiliated Libraries grid to determine each library's catalog(s) and access policies.
Subject to limitations of time and resources, most Affiliated Libraries serve not only their organizations, but also the general campus and off-campus communities.
The Affiliated Libraries Administrative Group (TALAG) consists of the Director of each Affiliated Library. The group meets quarterly in March, June, September, December. Additional meetings are scheduled as needed. All locations will be announced. Minutes are distributed to TALAG via the affil-ad reflector. More information, including the roster and meeting minutes, is available from the TALAG web site.
