Borrowing Books (Circulation)
At the Anthropology Library circulation desk you may check out materials,
place recalls and searches for materials that are not on the shelf, and
request retrieval of materials stored at the Northern Regional Library
Facility (NRLF). Alternatively, you can use the online catalog, OskiCat,
to renew, recall, or request NRLF items. A UCB library card is required,
and all patrons are required to have an email address on file with the
library.
Loan periods
Most books from the Anthropology Collection circulate from one month to
one year, depending upon the status of the borrower. The exception is
course reserves which can be checked out only for shorter periods. Materials
from NRLF have loan periods that vary according to the type of material
and the status of the borrower. Most books and monographs circulate to
undergraduates and fee-card library users for one month, to graduate students
for three months, and to UC Berkeley faculty for one year. Most periodicals
circulate for 2 hours to all borrowers. Unbound journals and archival
materials are available for room-use only.
When materials are checked out, a receipt is issued that indicates the length of the loan period for each item. If an item is requested by another library patron before its due date, the current borrower will be notified by e-mail that the item must be returned within 7 days.
Returns
Books can be returned to any library on the Berkeley campus, except when otherwise noted for special material like course reserves. Materials should be returned to the circulation desk during hours the library is open, and to the book return when the library is closed. The Anthropology Library book return is located in the hallway running alongside of the Library. (Directions: When facing the Anthropology Library entrance, go right to the end of the corridor, then left. The book return is located on the left hand side approximately halfway down the corridor. There is also a sign posted outside the Library indicating the book return’s location.)
Recalls
Items checked out to one borrower may be recalled by another borrower.
Recalled items must be returned to the library within 7 days. To recall
an item, present your library card and the title or call number of the
item you need at the Anthropology circulation desk. You may also place
a recall yourself using the "request" button in OskiCat,
the online library catalog. You will be notified by e-mail when the item
is available to be picked up.
Searches
Items not found on the shelf in the Anthropology stacks may have a search
request placed for them. To request a search, present the title or call
number of the item at the circulation desk. When the item is located,
you will be notified by e-mail.
Overdue material
Library users with overdue material will have borrowing privileges blocked until the items are returned or fees are paid. Replacement and processing fees are charged for overdue materials that are not returned. The University Campus Accounts and Receivables Office adds additional late fee to unpaid bills every 30 days a delinquent account goes unpaid. Unpaid bills are forwarded to a collection agency. Questions about bills and blocked or revoked privileges should be directed to the Operations Manager, Lillian Lee, at 642-2419.
