Collection Services Council

Charge:
The scale and scope of the campus library collections, the size of the collections budget, the number of selectors involved in collection development at UC Berkeley, and the number of other library units which are affected by this work all challenge both unified management on the one hand and adequately participative involvement on the other. To achieve a balance between central administration and the broadest possible library-wide involvement, Collection Services Council (following the precedents of the Collections Advisory Group and similar previous organizational structures) draws its membership from a wide range of constituencies.

Collection Services Council is advisory to the AUL and Director of Collections in the following areas:

  • collections budget preparation and sub-allocation;
  • technical operations and procedures in support of collection management;
  • the development of shared principles for collection planning and for its future direction;
  • the design and implementation of standards for collection evaluation;
  • the review of commonly understood expectations for selector performance;
  • monitoring and encouraging collaboration among UC-wide selector groups and with the California Digital Library; and
  • monitoring national trends in collection development theory and practice.
  • proposals developed by the AUL's other advisory groups (Budget Advisory Group, Digital Acquisitions Group, e-Book Advisory Group, and the Scholarly Communications Advisory Group)
  • librarywide Collections Development Policies and Procedures.

Collection Services Council conducts its business in open meetings, held once or twice a month. Its activities are recorded in minutes which are distributed, immediately upon their formal approval, to the entire library staff. Its business is also reported directly to and, as needed, discussed by the three subject councils, each of which is represented on Collection Services Council by two selectors serving staggered two-year terms. Council documents are distributed to an e-mail list, to which, at the discretion of the Chair, certain non-members may be added.

The Collection Services Council is one of five functional councils within the Library. For more information on the structure of library councils, see the Library Organization Chart.

Membership:
Chaired by the Associate University Librarian and Director of Collections, Collection Services Council is composed of: two representatives from each of the Subject Councils, each of the representatives being a selector; a representative of the affiliated libraries; and ex officio members from The Bancroft Library, Business Services, Catalog Department, Preservation, Acquisitions Department, East Asian Library, and the Northern Regional Library Facility.
