Off-Campus Access
Information for Specific Libraries
Computers with access to library resources and the Internet are
available in all campus libraries. Priority for use is given to UCB
students, faculty, and staff doing research. Information about use privileges
and responsibilities is available via the Library
Computer Use Policy and the UC Berkeley
Computer Use Policy. Full Internet access is provided for UCB students, faculty and staff
via CalNet ID logon. Research
access is available to all visitors and includes use of catalogs, article database and
licensed library resources, as well as websites in the .edu, .gov, and .org
domains (details).
Workstations are equipped for sound and are compatible
with standard audio headphones using mini-plug jacks. You are encouraged
to bring headphones for audio access (some libraries loan them at
their circulation desks). For information on assistive technology see the Library's guide to disability resources.
E-mail may be available in one of several ways. Mail functionality may be provided by a resource used -- for example a database may enable the sending of its results (available to all users), and/or users may have personal web mail accounts (accessible to those with Full Internet access, and to everyone if their account is hosted on a .edu, .gov, or .org domain). In instances where e-mail is not available or accessible, users should consider downloading as an alternative. Note, access to e-mail software, such as Microsoft's Outlook Express, is not available on Library computers.
Printing
is available from library workstations and from the various bookscan stations throughout the UCB libraries. All printing requires payment via the Cal 1 Card system. For full details, see the Library printing and scanning page (cost/payment, location, capabilities). The Moffitt Library houses a full service Copy Center, which provides expanded copy services and alternate payment options.
Downloading to USB drives is available via library workstations. Uploading from removable media is disabled for machine security. Users who need to aquire a drive, can do so at the Moffitt Copy Center (Moffitt Library, Third Floor, Room 321 | 510/643-7427) .
Word processing, standard desktop applications, and scanners (UCB students, faculty, and staff) are available in the
Moffitt Microcomputer Facility
and in other campus microcomputing
facilities (map | hours) . Printing from Microcomputer Facility computers (and laptops) is available and debits your Cal 1 Card (details). Select Microcomputer Facilities offer color printing (in addition to B&W) and provide scanners for their users. Scanning is available in the UCB libraries via the bookscan stations for a fee (details).
The Library Data
Lab (UCB students, faculty, and staff) is available for the
specific purpose of numeric data research. Workstations have a variety of
data analysis and GIS software. For lab details and contact information,
follow the above link.
Laptop connections (UCB students, faculty, and staff):
- AirBears wireless access is available in UCB libraries
(coverage). The AirBears website provides setup instructions for wireless access to the campus network. Use of AirBears is limited to those with a CalNet ID. Please note, the Library does not provide AirBears guest accounts.
- DHCP Service:
Some libraries offer connection to the campus network via wired network jacks.
Use of this method requires you first register and configure your machine to use the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Service (DHCP). Follow the above link for details and registration information.
- Technical support for AirBears and DHCP is available for students at the
Student Computer Consulting Service (email: ). Help is provided on a walk-in basis; appointments may also be made (details|signups available at their site).
AirBears and DHCP support for faculty and staff is available via the IS&T Service Desk @ 642-8500 (select option # 1 telephone & network support, submenu # 2 data network). The campus Information Services & Technology unit posts regular updates regarding any known campus system network issues or outages.
Off-campus access to library databases and online resources
is available for UCB students, faculty and staff. See the guide
Connecting from Off Campus for details.
Information for specific
libraries and their resources may often be obtained via that
library's website. Look for information about the facility,
its services, or equipment. Alternately, call the
library or its reference service for details (note, for the location and phone number of a library,
use the preceding link to access the library's hours and then follow that location's Map/Info link).
