Description of the UC Berkeley Libraries
There are three broad categories
of libraries on the UC Berkeley campus:
-
Units comprising what is referred to as "The Library"
-
Units referred to as "Affiliated Libraries"
-
Departmental libraries and reading rooms
"The Library" consists of Doe Library, Moffitt Library, the Bancroft Library
which houses rare books and western Americana, and 24 subject specialty
libraries serving various academic disciplines in the humanities, sciences,
and social sciences. These units, which make up "The Library", report to
the University Librarian. They are described more fully below as "Doe
Library and the Subject Specialty Libraries".
In addition, there are 11 libraries on the Berkeley campus which are
referred to as "Affiliated
Libraries". These units contain specialized research collections of
unique and often difficult-to-locate materials associated with organized
research units, academic departments, and professional schools on the Berkeley
campus. They primarily serve the teaching and research needs of faculty
and staff, although many of them also serve the campus community at large
and the general public. Professional librarians manage these libraries,
and they report to their corresponding Dean, Departmental Chair or Organized
Research Unit Director.
In addition, many academic departments maintain their own informal
libraries and reading rooms for use by department faculty and students.
Information regarding these is available through campus academic
department personnel.
DOE LIBRARY AND THE SUBJECT SPECIALTY LIBRARIES
The Library at UC Berkeley contains one of the finest research
collections in the country. The Library consists of Doe Library, the
Bancroft Library, Moffitt Library, and more than 20 subject specialty libraries serving
a variety of academic disciplines.
The Teaching Library is located in Moffitt Library and is aimed at
increasing student and faculty success by teaching them how to use a wide
range of information resources -- print, online, and networked -- thus
promoting information literacy among the campus scholarly community.
The Bancroft Library,
is one of the largest and most heavily used libraries of manuscripts, rare
books, and special collections in the United States. Among its components
are the Bancroft Collection of Western Americana and Latin Americana, the
Rare Book Collection, the History of Science and Technology Collection,
the University Archives, the Mark Twain Papers and Project, and the Regional
Oral History Office. The Berkeley collection is also distinguished for
its C.V. Starr East Asian Library which
contains rare editions of early manuscripts, scrolls, woodblock and engraved
maps, stone rubbings and bronze inscriptions.
The holdings of the University Library system include over 10 million
book volumes, 89,750 current serial publications, 415,900 pamphlets, 5
million microform items, 402,650 maps, 109,000 government documents, 61,900
sound recordings, and 29,159 video/DVD titles.
Most of the campus humanities and social sciences materials are located
in Doe Library. Moffitt Library is designed as a core collection and entry
point for new and undergraduate students. The Moffitt Microcomputer Facility,
also located in Moffitt Library, offers personal computing and consulting
services to Berkeley students, faculty and staff.
In late 1994, construction was completed on the Doe/Moffitt Project,
a four-story underground addition which connects Doe and Moffitt libraries.
The addition houses the Gardner Stack, and the collection formerly in Doe.
To acquaint students, faculty, staff, and other library users with The
Library's organization and services, orientation
tours are scheduled throughout the year, and library staff are
available to help at various information and reference desks.
The Library's services are described in this website, as well as in
leaflets available at many central service points and subject specialty
libraries. For personal information about the campus libraries or help in
using the online catalogs, ask at the Reference Center in Doe Library
(510-642-6657). For tours, small group sessions on catalog use, and
classes on a wide range of information resources, contact the Teaching
Library in Moffitt (510-642-5070) or one of the subject specialty
libraries.
The Library's collections and services are complemented by a variety
of campus special or "affiliated"
libraries.
