Re-Envisioning the UC Berkeley Library

The Timeline

• December 2011: Launch of the Re-envisioning Initiative. Learn more from the University Librarian’s introduction to the initiative, principles for the process, and charges to the Library's self-study groups.


• January 2012 - April 2012: Library self-study teams investigate options, develop viable approaches, and make recommendations to be shared with campus. Read the Library Service Models Self-Study Team Report, Library Service Model Overviews, and Role of the Librarian Self-Study Team Report.


• March 2013 - The University Library in the 21st Century: A Symposium (video) sponsored by The Commisssion on the Future of the UC Berkeley Librarya


• April 2012: University Librarian Tom Leonard’s April 16 letter to the campus.


• May 2012: Initial campus comment period through online survey. Learn more by reading the Executive Summary of the Initiative and the Q & A from the University Librarian.


• July 2012: Library receives feedback from the campus survey. Read the report: Attitudes Toward Re-Envisioning The UC Berkeley Library, An Online Survey Of The UC Campus Community.


• Summer 2012: University Librarian Tom Leonard leads further faculty engagement on plans. Library implementation planning and selected projects begin.


• Fall 2012: Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost George Breslauer and Academic Senate Chair Christina Maslach form The Commission on the Future of the UC Berkeley Library to study the current state of the University Library and envision its future. Their report will inform the Library's re-envisioning process and implementation planning. The Commission welcomes comments from the Library's many constituents.


• 2013: University Librarian Tom Leonard will issue an Outcome Letter.
