Agriculture and Resource Economics

Scope of Collection
The Giannini Foundation Library (GFL) is an Affiliated Library on the UC Berkeley Campus. The Library was founded in 1930 and is funded by the Giannini Foundation of Agricultural Economics. The Library was originally formed to support the research needs of Giannini Foundation members and their students. Giannini Foundation members include faculty in Agriculture and Resource Economics and cooperative extension specialists at UC Berkeley, Davis and Riverside. (There is a second, smaller library partially funded by the Foundation at UC Davis.) Over time this has become one of the most extensive collections on Agricultural and Resource Economics in the country and it has come to serve anyone doing research in these fields.

Strengths
The GFL collection is particularly strong in agriculture, environmental and natural resource economics in California and the Western States. Other geographic areas are covered depending upon faculty interest, but include China, Japan, Africa, Europe, India and Latin America.

The largest part of the collection consists of 153,000 fully cataloged unbound items including national, state and international government documents, trade publications, technical reports, manuscripts, conference proceedings, working papers and other rare and difficult to find material.

Special Collections
The GFL holds the only complete collection of the USDA's Federal Market News Service data in the world. This collection consists of 1600 reels of microfilm and some bound volumes.

We estimate that 50-70% of the unbound materials are rare or unique. The GFL has a complete collection of the Giannini Foundation publications since 1928 and many state agricultural experiment station publications from land-grant universities in the United States.

Primary Languages and Formats
The GFL collects materials that are primarily in English, though Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, French, German, Japanese, Chinese and other languages are also represented. The foreign language materials are either received on an exchange basis or purchased to support current faculty research.

The GFL collection is primarily print based, but also includes 3000 reels of microfilm, 150 maps and several other formats. The GFL maintains two eScholarship repositories of working papers and postprints from the UCB department of Agricultural & Resource Economics.

Related Collections
