Scope of Collection
One of three stand-alone, branch, anthropology libraries in major research libraries (other two are Harvard/Tozzer and Penn/The Museum Library), The George and Mary Foster Anthropology Library collects in the areas of socio-cultural anthropology, archaeology (emphasis on prehistory; excludes classical archaeology), medical anthropology, biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology and (some) scholarly literature in the field of folklore. This collection focus on the anthropological aspects of a broad array of subjects and geographic areas with emphasis on those areas in which Anthropology faculty have worked and are currently engaged.
Strengths
Focus of American archaeology is on the west, particularly California.
Special Collections
Small, special collection of semi-rare books (mid 19th century imprints) for room use only. Emerging archive of faculty publications. Impressive collection of Japanese archaeology reports (the largest outside Japan)
Primary Languages and Formats
English primarily, with some western European languages; some Slavic and two major collections of Japanese archaeology materials. Primarily print-based collection with some microfilm/fiche; a few CDs.
