Budget Actions Taken in 2002-2003
to redress projected shortfall for 2003-2004

In Fall 2002, the Library projected a budget deficit for 2003-2004 of $667,000. This was based on estimated inflation rates of

Projected deficit 2003-2004 addressed in 2002-2003

Permanent Allocations (including binding) $ 12,295,000
Recurring Expenses (including binding) $ 12,962,000
Projected Surplus/Deficit before action $ (667,000)

The AUL for Collections, anticipating future years deficits, set the target reduction upwards to $700,000. The reduction in recurring expenses was taken in two parts as described below.

Elsevier titles

From January to March 2003, the Library cancelled local print subscriptions for Elsevier titles that are now being purchased and housed in the shared UC Print Archive. (If of interest, these titles may be accessed in Excel format). This initiative accounted for nearly half of the needed reductions ($337,433) with no loss of content.

Other titles

The balance needed to mitigate the projected deficit was realized a)developing lists of serial titles for cancellations, which were discussed and finalized with faculty, and b) reducing appropriations to subject-based monographic funds. If you have questions or comments, please contact your library liaison.

Because of the nature of the various disciplines we serve, titles that were cancelled in 2003-2004 are in two lists:
