Determining Value
Building a great research collection across many discilplines requires discussion, discernment, and experience. The process involves ongoing communication between the Library and our faculty and users. No single criterion determines the outcome of these discussions — both qualitative and quantitative criteria are carefully considered.
The final decision about the value of a title is determined by Berkeley Library selectors based on their knowledge of campus use of our collections, and within the context of a variety of data points, including:
- use statistics
- impact factors
- price
- other analysis tools being developed, some by UC faculty
We consider the holdings of our neighboring and partner institutions and maintain robust interlibrary borrowing/lending services to ensure that all titles of interest are available to our users.
