Finding Maps in OskiCat

Maps in the Earth Sciences & Map Library, the Bancroft Library, and other campus libraries can be found by searching OskiCat.

Use the Advanced Keyword Search to search for subject keywords.

Helpful hints and tips:

• Include the word “maps” in your subject search as it should always appear in the subject headings for maps.
• Include place names to find maps for a particular location: start specific (e.g., city) then broaden your region (e.g., county, state, country).
• Choose other keywords from our list of common subject keywords for maps.
• Use the Year of Publication option at the bottom of the Advanced Keyword Search to limit by date (e.g., After 1919 and Before 1930 for 1920-1929).

Note the call number and location to locate the map in our collection.

Unable to find a map for your location? Take advantage of our extensive topographic map collection. When you cannot find an individual sheet map for your area of interest at the desired scale, you may be able to find one in a topographic map set.

For U.S. topographic maps: USGS topographic quadrangles (“7.5 and 15 minute topo quads”) are filed alphabetically by quad name within each state in three sections of the map collection: California topos, Eastern U.S. topos, and Western U.S. topos.

To see what years we have for a particular quad, search LC Call Number for G3700 svar .U6 [XX] [Quad Name], where XX is the two-letter state code (e.g., G3700 svar .U6 CA Oakland West).

For international topographic maps: use the Advanced Keyword Search to search for subject keywords [country topographic maps].

When viewing the OskiCat record for a map set:

• Pay attention to scale, dates, and publishers.
• Use digital and paper index maps to identify relevant sheets.
• Click “View volumes” to see if we own the sheets that you need.
