Thesis & Dissertation Research is a strategic bibliographic guide for architecture graduate students beginning their professional report, thesis, or dissertation work at UC Berkeley. For additional assistance please consult the Environmental Design Library reference staff, 210 Wurster Hall.

UCB Architecture students who have determined their thesis or dissertation topic, and have done a preliminary search, may want to make an appointment with David Eifler for assistance in preparing a thorough literature search.

UC Berkeley faculty, registered students, and staff who are off campus may use items marked UCB Only or UC Only by using the Library's proxy service.

Citation Management

Managing bibliographic citations is a necessary and sometimes tedious aspect of written research. Use one or both of the following computer-based bibliographic management programs to manage citations, format papers, and create bibliographies in a variety of styles. Each program allows you to download citation information directly from selected online databases into your own bibliographic database.

• EndNote: A sophisticated proprietary bibliographic management software and a powerful tool for reseachers. It may also be purchased on campus from the Computer Store--The Scholar's Workstation. Citations saved in RefWorks can be exported to EndNote.
• RefWorks -UCB Only RefWorks is a web-based bibliographic management service licensed by The Library for use by all current UCB faculty, staff and students. It allows you to create your own personal database by importing references and/or images from online databases, and use these references in writing papers and automatically formatting the paper and bibliography in seconds. As a web-based product, RefWorks is available to users across various platforms including Windows, Mac, Unix, etc. Although it lacks the power of EndNote, its ease of use makes it attractive. RefWorks also serves as a complement to EndNote, since citations saved to RefWorks can later be exported to EndNote. To sign up for an individual account, use the RefWorks New User form.
• Zotero: A full-featured, free, open-source citation manager especially useful for new media sources.

Once you have created a successful search in a periodical index, keep yourself informed as new items that match your original search appear. Using the alert service, you will receive an e-mail notifying you of new citations added to the database on your topic. Use the CSA Alert in Avery Index, ARTbibliographies Modern, BHA, Bibliography of the History of Art, Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management, e-psyche, ERIC, GeoRef, PAIS International, PsycINFO, and Sociological Abstracts; and Alerts in Web of Knowledge Databases (Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences, or Science Citation Indexes). Note that you can have several update profiles simultaneously. Not all periodical indexes offer this service.

Full-Text Journals Online

For a convenient list of journal titles available online to UC users, see CDL's (California Digital Library) Find e-Journal, or the UCB listing at Electronic Journals.

Few architecture journals are available online, but many interdisciplinary journals cover architecture. [NOTE: You may also search Melvyl or OskiCat under name of a specific journal to see if it is available online.] Many of the vendors which aggregate collections of full-text journals (e.g., Project Muse, JSTOR, ECO, Ingenta, etc.) offer their own search Engines, but be aware that their searching capacity is rarely as sophisticated as actual periodical indexes. Below is a selective list of "packages" of many different journals offered full-text. Also note that periodical indexes that use UC-eLinks, such as Avery Index, will link the citation to the electronic version when it is available in the UC Libraries.

• Academic Search Complete - UCB Only Indexes and abstracts articles in more than 10,900 journals and other publications in English, Spanish, German, French, Italian and Portuguese; full-text is available for over 5300 journals. Covers articles published 1865 to present.
• AltPress watch via ProQuest - UCB Only A full-text resource that covers newspapers, magazines, and journals of the alternative and independent press. Coverage generally begins 1995--; East Bay Express is included starting 6/01.
• American Periodicals Series Online, 1740-1900 - UCB Only Includes digitized images of the pages of American magazines and journals published from colonial days to the dawn of the 20th century. More than 1,000 titles including Benjamin Franklin's General Magazine, the first American professional journals, and several popular magazines still in publication, such as Vanity Fair, Harper's, and Ladies' Home Journal.
• ECO (FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online) - UCB Only Includes the full text of scholarly journals in a variety of subject areas. OCLC/ECO includes all of the original content, images, and bibliographic information for all journals.
• Google Scholar- Lists selected journal articles, books, preprints, and technical reports in many subject areas (though more specialized article databases cover architecture and design more completely). Some listings include links to related articles and to other sources that cite the item. Includes content from free resources (such as ArXiv.org and university websites) as well as subscription resources (such as electronic journals from selected publishers). Use the UC-eLinks option, when available, to find the UCB access to a publication. Be sure to set Google Scholar Preferences to "UC libraries," and under Bibliography Manager, select "RefWorks" or "EndNote" to easily export citations into your database.
• HarpWeek - UCB Only Full-image reproductions of Harper's Weekly from its beginning in 1857 to 1912. Provides access to information about 19th and early 20th century advertising, illustrations, culture, history, literature, and notable figures.
• Ingenta Connect - UCB Only Provides full-text access to domestic and international scholarly & academic publications, in a wide range of subject areas, including architecture and design.
• JSTOR - UCB Only A full-text archive of interdisciplinary scholarly journal literature. A list of included journals by discipline is available. Includes full-text of several art and architectural history journals from their beginnings to five years from present. Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians is included.
• Lexis-Nexis academic - UCB Only Provides access to thousands of full-text news, business, and legal sources from newspapers and periodicals. This web product is not the full version of Lexis-Nexis.
• Making of America - Full-text access to 267 monograph volumes and over 100,000 journal articles from 22 journals with 19th-century imprints. The collection is particularly strong in the areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology.

Dissertations not owned by UC Berkeley may often be borrowed through Interlibrary Service. Note that ordinary Melvyl subject searches will frequently miss dissertations which often are not given subject treatment; in Advanced Search use title or keyword searches in combination with format dissertations.

Includes citations for materials ranging from the first U.S. dissertation, accepted in 1861, to those accepted as recently as last semester. Some abstracts included.
