Thesis & Dissertation Research

Thesis & Dissertation Research is a strategic bibliographic guide for architecture graduate students beginning their professional report, thesis, or dissertation work at UC Berkeley. For additional assistance please consult the Environmental Design Library reference staff, 210 Wurster Hall.

UCB Architecture students who have determined their thesis or dissertation topic, and have done a preliminary search, may want to make an appointment with David Eifler for assistance in preparing a thorough literature search.

UC Berkeley faculty, registered students, and staff who are off campus may use items marked UCB Only or UC Only by using the Library's proxy service.

Citation Management

Managing bibliographic citations is a necessary and sometimes tedious aspect of written research. Use one or both of the following computer-based bibliographic management programs to manage citations, format papers, and create bibliographies in a variety of styles. Each program allows you to download citation information directly from selected online databases into your own bibliographic database.

Finding Books

For a guide to UCB library catalogs see Guide to Library Catalogs. For information for off-campus access to The Library's catalogs see Connecting from Off Campus.

For information about off-campus access to The Library's online resources see Connecting from Off Campus.

Journal Article Indexes & Databases

See the following web guides for descriptions of the core journal article indexes for architecture, and some related ones.

Current Awareness Service UC Only

Once you have created a successful search in a periodical index, keep yourself informed as new items that match your original search appear. Using the alert service, you will receive an e-mail notifying you of new citations added to the database on your topic. Use the CSA Alert in Avery Index, ARTbibliographies Modern, BHA, Bibliography of the History of Art, Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management, e-psyche, ERIC, GeoRef, PAIS International, PsycINFO, and Sociological Abstracts; and Alerts in Web of Knowledge Databases (Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences, or Science Citation Indexes). Note that you can have several update profiles simultaneously. Not all periodical indexes offer this service.

Full-Text Journals Online

For a convenient list of journal titles available online to UC users, see CDL's (California Digital Library) Find e-Journal, or the UCB listing at Electronic Journals.

Few architecture journals are available online, but many interdisciplinary journals cover architecture. [NOTE: You may also search Melvyl or OskiCat under name of a specific journal to see if it is available online.] Many of the vendors which aggregate collections of full-text journals (e.g., Project Muse, JSTOR, ECO, Ingenta, etc.) offer their own search Engines, but be aware that their searching capacity is rarely as sophisticated as actual periodical indexes. Below is a selective list of "packages" of many different journals offered full-text. Also note that periodical indexes that use UC-eLinks, such as Avery Index, will link the citation to the electronic version when it is available in the UC Libraries.

Finding Newspaper Articles

For newspapers on the web see News Databases via Electronic Resources, The Library's web page.

Visual Resources, Images, & Maps

See the Using Images for Research section of this guide, for information on doing visual research. See also Digital Images and Copyright by 2Learn.ca Education Society, Canada, 1997-2006.

Archives

Archival and other original materials are often difficult to locate, so check in directories of archives and special collections to locate manuscripts, drawings and other unpublished materials. Use WorldCAT UC Only, Online Archive of California, and other guides to determine which institutions have collections on your topic. See also the list of Library Catalogs and Special Collections in Reference Sources on Architecture, an Environmental Design Library reference guide. Note that many archival and special collections are reproduced on microform and available in the Library. See Microform Collections below for a selective listing.

Specialized Research Sources Biography | Book Reviews | Citation Indexes | Dissertations | Proceedings | Building Codes & Technical Literature | Microform Collections

Biography

Additional electronic biographical resources are available from The Library's home page: go to Electronic Resources by Type and select Biographical Sources.

Book Reviews

Note that in several journal article databases you may limit your search to reviews.

Citation Indexes

Use citation indexes to track the work and impact of a particular author by looking up a reference to a work you have identified as helpful, and identifying journal articles citing that work. A good way to identify other authors working on the same topic. Also useful as journal article indexes. For a guide to using the citation indexes use the ISI Tutorial For a guide to citation searching see Cited Reference Searching. For creating current awareness updates, see ISI Alerts.

The following citation indexes are available on the web as part of the ISI Web of Knowlege, or Web of Science.

Dissertations & Theses

Dissertations not owned by UC Berkeley may often be borrowed through Interlibrary Service. Note that ordinary Melvyl subject searches will frequently miss dissertations which often are not given subject treatment; in Advanced Search use title or keyword searches in combination with format dissertations.

Proceedings

Papers from conferences, symposia, colloquia, etc., are indexed somewhat haphazardly through journal article indexes. Note types of materials covered when using an unfamiliar index. The databases below provide good access to papers and conferences.

Building Codes & Technical Literature

Microform Collections

The UCB Libraries, including the Environmental Design Library, have a number of microform collections of valuable research resources, including American Architectural Books, the British Architectural Library Drawings Collection, the R.I.B.A. Library Rare Books Collection, and other collections.

Libraries & Organizations

Community and professional organizations can be valuable information resources, e.g., local historical societies; neighborhood preservation groups; regional and national associations. Some directories are available in the Environmental Design Library and many organizations have web sites. See also the Archives section above for a list of Library Archives and Special Collections. See the guide Finding Local Information for selected links to California and San Francisco Bay Area libraries and historical societies. Also consult the Organizations and Libraries section of the Environmental Design Library's various architectural subject research guides.
