American Cultural Landscapes: A Brief Guide to Research

American Cultural Landscapes is a research and bibliographic guide to UC Berkeley resources for the study of the American cultural and built environment. This guide will be of particular interest to students in Environmental Design 169. For additional assistance consult the Environmental Design Library reference staff.

UC Berkeley faculty, registered students, and staff who are off campus may use items marked UCB Only or UC Only by using the Library's proxy service or the Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Getting Started

Remember to start early. Allow time to recall books checked out or stored off-campus, and to borrow from other libraries' materials not here at UC Berkeley.

Managing bibliographic citations is a necessary and sometimes tedious aspect of written research. Use RefWorks, a web-based bibliographic management program to manage citations, format papers, and create bibliographies efficiently and quickly in a variety of styles. It allows you to download citation information directly from selected online databases into your own bibliographic database.

• RefWorks UCB Only
  RefWorks is a web-based bibliographic management service licensed by The Library for use by all current UCB faculty, staff and students. It allows you to create your own personal database by importing references from online databases, and use these references in writing papers and automatically formatting the paper and bibliography in seconds. As a web-based product, RefWorks is available to users across various platforms including Windows, Mac, Unix, etc. Although it lacks the power of EndNote, its ease of use makes it attractive. RefWorks also serves as a complement to EndNote, since citations saved to RefWorks can later be exported to EndNote. To sign up for an individual account, use the RefWorks New User form.

Research Strategy Worksheet

Use this search strategy worksheet to develop a plan for your information search. Once you have planned your search, use these keywords, subject words and concepts to search the basic resources (dictionaries, encyclopedias, bibliographies, periodical indexes, etc.) in this guide.

Another good method to plan your research strategy is by "concept mapping." See the Rhode Island School of Design's short visual tutorial on Concept Mapping.

Truncation Symbols

• Use the truncation symbols in electronic resources to find variations in spelling or singular/plural of words. Consult the help screens of the catalog or index you are using to find their truncation or wildcard symbols.
• Although not all databases use the same symbols, many use * or ?. Look for different wildcard symbols which can be used in the middle of a word, e.g. wom#n to retrieve woman or women.
• In Melvyl or OskiCat use * at the end of the root of a word, e.g.,

Grocer* to retrieve Grocer, Grocers, Grocery, Groceries

Looking for Books

An easy way to begin is to use the keyword approach in the OskiCat or Melvyl catalogs, which allow you to search key words from titles or subject headings of books. (You may want to initially limit your search to the most recent ten years.)

• If you are not an expert user of the Library catalogs, take a drop-in class to improve your efficiency and save time. Check the Library workshops and tours schedule.
• Search using keywords and combine them with AND, OR, or NOT to narrow or broaden your results. Identify keywords from:

Journal Article Indexes

An enormous amount of specialized information on the cultural environment can be found in journal (periodical or magazine) articles.

• Articles are NOT included in Library Catalogs (OskiCat and Melvyl).
• You must search periodical indexes to locate articles on your subject.
• Few indexes for materials prior to the mid-1980s are available in electronic format, so print indexes may well be your only source for most older information. Print periodical indexes in the Environmental Design Library are located near the library catalogs and are arranged in call number order on the Index Shelves.
• Because of the interdisciplinary nature of your topic, remember to search in both specialized indexes like the Avery Index UC only (architecture, landscape architecture and planning) and multi-disciplinary indexes like Academic Search Complete UC only.
• Be sure to check the periodical indexes available through the UCB Library Homepage, Electronic Resources, by Subject
• Databases that have make it easy to find the call number of print copies of articles, or link you to electronic full-text. Simply click on the UC-eLinks symbol, and automatically a Melvyl search is done for the journal title.

• (Digital) Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps UCB Only Provides maps of cities and towns of California from the 1880s to 1950s. The maps are large-scale plans containing data used originally to estimate the potential risk for urban structures, and include an outline of each building, the size, shape and construction materials, heights, and function of structures, and location of windows and doors. The maps also give street names, street and sidewalk widths, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. They are an excellent source on the history, growth, and development of American cities, towns, and neighborhoods. Earlier and later maps are available on microfilm in the Earth Sciences and Maps Library.
