General Information.
The majority of materials in the Hargrove Music Library—with the notable exception of
sound and video recordings, periodicals, microforms, archival materials,
and special collections—circulate for use outside the library. Borrowing
materials requires a current UC Berkeley Library card. For UCB students
a valid UCB photo ID acts as a library card. Other borrowers must have a
current library card issued by the
Privileges Desk located on the 1st floor of Doe Library, at
the entrance to the Gardner Stacks. Visitors to the Hargrove Music Library
are welcome to use collections on-site.
Loan periods are determined by material type and
patron status.
Borrowers are responsible for all library materials
borrowed until the items are returned to the Jean Gray Hargrove Music Library. Library materials
can also be returned to the Music Library's bookdrop, located outside the entrance. Please return
materials borrowed from other
libraries directly to the library from which they were borrowed.
Inventories and Renewals.
Library users may see an inventory of library materials
checked out in their name, and renew them, by logging in to the Library catalog, OskiCat. Material that has been recalled by another borrower may not be renewed. Overdue materials may be renewed unless your library account
is blocked.
Holds and Searches.
If an item is not on the shelf, check with the
Circulation Desk. All library materials are subject to recall after
7 days. Recalled materials not returned by the requested date may incur
a fine.
If it is checked out, it can be recalled and held for
library card holders. If the material is not checked out, a search may
be requested. When material is located, the borrower will be notified and the
item held for 7 days.
Overdue and Replacement Fines.
Patrons with overdue library materials will have
their borrowing privileges automatically blocked until the items are returned.
Blocking prevents the borrower from borrowing materials from any library
on campus. An overdue item that is billed for replacement incurs a replacement
fee of $100 (more if the actual replacement cost is higher), plus a non-refundable
$10 processing charge.
Overdue fines and replacement charges will be reflected
on a CARS statement that is mailed to borrowers owing fines. Lost materials and
problems with overdue fines or replacement bills should immediately be reported
to the Music Library Circulation Supervisor by calling (510) 643-6196 or
sending email to the Circulation Supervisor.
Interlibrary Borrowing.
Books, scores, articles, and theses from other libraries may be requested online using the
UCB Interlibrary Borrowing
Service Request Form.
Requested items must be picked up at
the
Interlibrary
Borrowing Service, Room 133, Doe Library. Forms are also available at the Music Library
reference desk.
-
You may request monographs from other UC campuses via
the California Digital Library (CDL) web catalog, Melvyl, using request button.
- For materials at Stanford University or the University of Texas at Austin, you may
request items via
the Research Library Cooperative Program (RLCP) Request
Form. Borrowers from UCB should first see the RLCP
website for information and registration.
Interlibrary borrowing services are free to UCB students, faculty, and staff. Please
note that in most libraries many kinds of materials, such as sound recordings and
reference works, are available only locally and will not be available through interlibrary
borrowing services.

Digital Music Network.
Also known as MusiLAN (Music Local Area Network), DMN stations provide
access to sound recordings on reserve for music courses in the current semester. Online music reserves in the DMN
are not found by searching the UCB catalog, but are listed online by course on the
DMN homepage.
Students can access CD-quality streamed audio files and the related accompanying
materials at stations 1-39 (excluding 21-22 and 31) of the Listening & Computer Room (106) by selecting the
"MUSILAN (Music Listening Reserves)" icon on the computer desktop. Headphones are available for
checkout at the Circulation Desk.
Listening Equipment.
The Computer & Listening Room (106) is equipped with CD, DVD, VCD, VHS, LP/78, DAT, audio cassette, and
reel-to-reel audio tape players. Headphones are available for checkout at the Circulation Desk.
Anyone with a picture identification card may use the listening facilities; UCB students with listening
assignments have priority. Taping or dubbing is not permitted in the Music Library.
Course Reserves.
Course reserves and permanent reserves are shelved
behind the Circulation Desk. There is a borrowing limit of one reserve
item per medium type per borrower (i.e., a person may borrow one CD and one score). Course
reserves are listed in OskiCat, UCB Library catalog, as indicated in the web page on
Reserves.
Case X.
Rare printed material and certain other books are designated in the online catalog
as "Case X" and may be requested at the Circulation Desk. Rare books are for
Library use only, and may be used only Monday through Friday from 9am until 4:45pm. Your
photo ID will be held while you use the book.
Case X items are not available through interlibrary
loan. Photocopying is not permitted, unless special arrangements are made
with a reference librarian. Instructions on restrictions and special handling
will be provided at the time of your request.
Cage. Music manuscripts are kept in a secure
location and may be requested by number at the Reference desk during regular
reference hours. Manuscript holdings are not contained
in OskiCat or MELVYL catalogs; descriptions of items may be found RISM A/II
and in John Emerson, Catalog of Pre-1900 Vocal Manuscripts
in the Music Library, University of California at Berkeley, (Berkeley:
U. of California, 1988), as well as Vincent Duckles, Minnie Elmer and Pierluigi Petrobelli,
Thematic Catalog of a Manuscript of Eighteenth-Century Italian
Instrumental Music in the University of California, Berkeley, Music
Library, (Berkeley and Los Angeles: University of California, 1963).
NRLF.
Many older books and journals in the Music Library
collection, as well as archival collections and other materials, are held in locations off campus due to lack of space in the
library. Request Music Library materials housed at NRLF directly through the OskiCat catalog with a Patron ID login
or by filling out a request form at the circulation desk.
Retrieval requires 2 days, excluding weekends. Holders of valid UC library
borrower's cards may visit NRLF
in person.
Sather Tower.
The Music Library also has materials stored in Sather Tower. These materials, found in the
OskiCat catalog,
can be requested at the circulation desk. Retrieval requires 1-2 days, excluding weekends.
