New Head Librarian. (11.14.08) On October 6th we welcomed John Shepard as the new Head of the Music Library. John comes to us most recently from Rutgers University, where he served on the New Brunswick Library Faculty as Music & Performing Arts Librarian since August 2004. Prior to that, John was Head of the Rare Books & Manuscripts, and Curator, Toscanini Memorial Archives, Special Collections, of the Music Division of the New York Public Library. He is an active member of the Music Library Association, the International Association of Music Libraries, the American Musicological Society, and Chamber Music America. John holds a Bachelor of Music in Theory & Composition from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and an M.S. in Library Service from Columbia University. Please help us give John a warm welcome.

Oxford Music Online. (6.19.08) Oxford Music Online is now the place to find a variety of music reference sources. Currently the site hosts Grove Music Online, the Encyclopedia of Popular Music, the Oxford Companion to Music, and the Oxford Dictionary of Music. Enhanced search functions include the ability to limit searches by source, time period, and subject, while advanced searches can be limited to search full article text, entry title, bibliography, or works lists only. Grove Online articles have links to the audio databases Classical Music Online and the Database of Recorded Music (DRAM), and entries in Grove bibliographies are linked to the Melvyl catalog via UC-eLinks for quick catalog searches.

Streaming Audio Databases. (3.20.08) UC Berkeley now has access to several streaming audio databases. These databases are accessible by anyone on the UCB campus, but off-campus use is restricted to UCB students, faculty, and staff via the Library's proxy server. See our Streaming Audio Databases page for descriptions of these resources, which include Smithsonian Global Sound, Naxos Music Library and Naxos Music Library Jazz, and the historical databases American Song and African American Song.

Two New Resources. (2.04.08) Two new resources are now available on the Music Library's reference works page. The first is the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music Online, which was available to us at the end of 2007 on a trial basis. Like the printed version, articles in the Garland Encyclopedia include detailed photographs that show musicians, musical instruments, and the cultural context of dances, rituals, and ceremonies. Other images include drawings, maps, and musical examples. This database is restricted to UCB access only.

Also on the reference page is Schubert-Autographs, from the Wienbibliothek im Rathaus. Schubert-Autographs is a comprehensive collection of digital reproductions of score autographs, letters, and other documents by Franz Schubert. The site has a full-text search feature, as well as indices by title, Deutsch number, and watermark.

New Library Assistant. (1.07.08) The Music Library welcomes Sarah Moberg as its new acquisitions and serials assistant. Sarah recently moved to California from Vermont, where she worked at the music library at Middlebury College. Sarah plays the piano and the flute, and is also a trained massage therapist.

New Resources. (11.29.07) Recently, several new resources have been added to the Music Library's reference works page. These resources include an online version of the Hofmeister Monatsberichte, a composer index for RISM B/I, and the Digital Image Archive of Medieval Music (DIAMM), which contains high-quality digital images of European sources of medieval polyphonic music.

Changes to Library Staff. (8.01.07) Manuel Erviti has agreed to serve as Interim Head of the Jean Gray Hargrove Music Library. Many of you have already come to know him during the past 5+ years as Assistant Head, where he has been responsible for public services. His most recent experience before coming to Berkeley includes 3 years as reference librarian at Columbia College Chicago. Manuel holds a B.A. in music from the University of Chicago, an M.A. in musicology from the Eastman School of Music, and completed an M.S. in library and information science and a Ph.D. in musicology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1997. This interim position is expected to extend about one year, until a recruitment process for a permanent head is completed.

The Music Library also welcomes Allison Rea as its new Reference Librarian. Allison has worked in the Music Library as a Library Assistant in various capacities since March 2000. She came to UCB in February, 1999 and served as circulation supervisor at the Environmental Design Library. Awarded a Bachelor's degree in Music from UC Santa Cruz, Allison recently completed a master's degree in library and information science at San Jose State University. We are very excited to have Allison's experience on board.

John Roberts' Retirement. (7.01.07) After many years of service and a distinguished career, John Roberts stepped down as Head of the Music Library at the end of June 2007. John served as Head of the Music Library since 1986, where he added remarkably to the Library's collection of rare materials. In 2005, the Berkeley division of the Librarian's Association of the University of California honored John Roberts with its Distinguished Librarian Award, citing his distinguished contributions to music, exemplifying "the highest ideals of librarianship on the Berkeley campus." Announcements of the award include CU News, the UCB library staff newsletter, and an article in the Berkeleyan. John is a leading authority on the music of Handel, and continues to do research. Everyone in the UC Berkeley music community wishes John the best of luck in his retirement.

Groundbreaking for the Jean Gray Hargrove Music Library. On April 13, 2002, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Jean Gray Hargrove Music Library took place on the Music Library's future home on North Field. Construction of the new facility began Fall 2002.
