ACCESS TO THE COLLECTION
The Physics-Astronomy Library, a branch of the UC Berkeley Library system, is an open-stack library. All Users are welcome to browse the collection, use library materials and the library computers. Only users with valid, current UC Berkeley student, faculty or staff calnet photo ID or current Library cards issued by the Library Privileges Desk in the Main (Doe) Library may borrow library materials. Service priority is given to UC students, faculty and staff. You may be asked to show UCB campus identification.

DIRECTIONS TO THE LIBRARY: our address is: 351 Le Conte Hall. We are located on the 3rd floor of Le Conte Hall, which is in the center of campus and adjacent to the Campanile. Map. Our circulation desk phone number is: 510.642.3122. This line is answered during open hours.

THE COLLECTION
The Physics-Astronomy Library is one of eight science libraries on the UC Berkeley Campus and serves the Departments of Physics and Astronomy, Physical Sciences Division of the College of Letters & Science. The research-level collection includes materials in all formats and on all areas of astronomy, physics, astrophysics, cosmology; atomic, molecular and optical physics; condensed matter; experimental particle physics; theoretical high energy physics, nonlinear dynamics; galaxies, planets, mathematical, chemical and biophysics.

Current UCB faculty, students, staff and patrons in the library have systemwide access to licensed electronic resources such as scholarly journals, electronic books, print journals and books, abstracts, indexes, data and citation management software. The Library collects videos and DVDs of colloquia and visiting lecturers and is streaming older videos.

Most material is shelved in open stacks. Current & bound periodicals are in alphabetical order with a few selected titles on reserve at the Circulation Desk. Books and folios (oversized books) are shelved in Library of Congress call number order.

RESEARCH & REFERENCE ADVISORY:

NRLF / STORAGE (Northern Regional Library Facility)
Many older books and journals in the Physics-Astronomy Library collection are in storage off campus due to lack of space and infrequent use. Library card holders and UCB students, staff and faculty may request materials from NRLF using OskiCat or complete a request form at the circulation desk. Retrieval usually requires 1-2 days, excluding weekends. Holders of valid UC library borrower's cards may visit NRLF in person. Shuttle bus service to go to NRLF is available.

INTERNET ACCESS & COMPUTER USAGE
On Campus:
Internet access is available on campus through library computers. CalNet ID is required for full Internet access. Research access is available to all visitors and includes use of catalogs, article database and licensed library resources, as well as website's in the .edu, .gov, and .org domains (details | local alternatives for Internet access). The Physics-Astronomy Library has 8 public computer stations.

Wired laptop Internet access is available for current UC Berkeley students, staff and faculty by registering your laptop with Campus DHCP Service. The PHysics-Astronomy LIbrary has outlets from the wall near the study tables. For information on other campus Internet services, see http://ist.berkeley.edu/getting-started/individuals Wireless Internet access on campus is available for current UC Berkeley students, staff and faculty through AirBears.

Connecting@Berkeley is a suite of software (available to UCB students, faculty and staff) that helps you get connected and stay protected when using the Internet. It includes anti-virus and firewall applications for meeting campus security standards, helps you add settings for connection to the AirBears wireless service, and more.

OFF CAMPUS ACCESS
Proxy Service allows authorized UC Berkeley users to gain remote access (from off campus) to electronic resources licensed by the UC Berkeley Library. Use this link for current configuration directions.

VPN (Virtual Private Network) Service. Use this link for current installation and use directions. After you install and run the VPN "client" software on your computer, you can log in with a CalNet ID to establish a secure connection with the campus network. Some resources that are not web-based require VPN for off-campus use: MDL Crossfire Beilstein and Gmelin, SciFinder Scholar, and the Connect function in EndNote. Important: VPN must be turned on before you access licensed library resources. Be sure to turn off VPN when you have finished using these resources. For more information, see our VPN FAQ.

COMPUTER USE POLICIES: Physics-Astronomy Library computer use policies:
Limit your search time to 20 minutes when others are waiting.
Limit personal email, general surfing and other non-research use.
Please be observant and comply with staff announcements.
Do not tamper with computers (i.e. add software, change configurations, by pass system restrictions).
    Loss of privilege is a consequence of tampering.
Playing games is prohibited.

Copying, Printing & Computer Facilities

The Library has 1 self-service photocopier/printer. The public PCs print to the copy machines, you must use a Copy Card. Printing/copying costs are .10 per sheet. UCB students, faculty and staff can purchase or add value to Copy Cards in the Physics-Astronomy Library vending machine, at the Copy Service in 321 Moffitt Library, 238 Boalt Hall or in the Bioscience Library.

These computer labs generally have software and printing available.
