Protecting and restoring the natural ecosystems of the Alameda Creek watershed

Purpose:
To support a community-based effort to restore native steelhead trout to Alameda Creek through the removal or modification of instream barriers in the lower watershed.

The Alameda Creek Alliance is a community watershed organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the natural ecosystems of the Alameda Creek Watershed. The overall goal of The Steelhead Trout Restoration Project is to ensure that responsible agencies coordinate and implement restoration action plans that will allow a self-sustaining run of native steelhead trout to repopulate Alameda Creek.

To accomplish this the Alliance will work to ensure that each of the responsible agencies remove or modify the instream barriers in the lower watershed. With the San Francisco Bay Fund grant, the Alliance will encourage specific restoration activities including:
    (1)
construction of a fish ladder;
    (2)
fish passage past two inflatable dams;
    (3)
installation of fish screens;
    (4)
replacement of culverts with bridges;
    (5)
removal or modification of Niles and Sunol dams; and
    (6)
fish passage past the PG&E pipeline crossing.

In addition, the Alliance will engage community residents in restoration efforts through:
    (1)
publication of quarterly newsletter;
    (2)
slideshow presentations to community groups;
    (3)
fish rescues; and
    (4) creek clean-ups.

The Alliance will work to include surrounding communities in the decision-making process through:
    (1)
organization of monthly community strategy meetings;
    (2)
regular e-mail alerts to members;
    (3)
press releases;
    (4)
letter writing campaigns to management agencies; and
    (5)
attendance at agency board meetings.
