Purpose:
The Clean Streams/ Clean Bay (CS/CB) Community Watershed Monitoring Project addresses the problem of toxic contamination, primarily mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the Santa Clara Basin and San Francisco Bay watersheds. These toxins degrade the health of local streams and the bay by accumulating in fish which if over-consumed pose threats to human health. This program allows local high school students to become involved with monitoring their streams and educating the community about protecting and monitoring the watersheds in their area.

The goals of Clean Streams/ Clean Bay are:

(1) To Build Community Ownership of Pollution Problems-through public information programs and citizen participation in watershed monitoring.
(2) To reduce Pollution-by using citizen monitoring to shape the TMDL research agenda.
(3) To Demonstrate Effective Citizen Participation- through advocacy activities designed to influence timely pollution reduction action.
