• American Factfinder (U.S. Census Bureau)
  Interactive, searchable database used to find population, housing, industry and business statistics from the U.S. Census. Data collected in Census 2000, the 1990 Census of Population and Housing, the American Community Survey and the 1997 Economic Census. Allows uses to compile census data into tables, maps and downloadable files, which can be viewed or printed.
  
• Bureau of Labor Statistics
  Presents up-to-date U.S. economic statistical information in areas such as 'Inflation and Spending' and 'International Statistics.' Also available are the latest numbers for the Consumer Price Index, unemployment rate, and the Producer Price. Provides past and current statistics for the U.S. economy as a whole; regional economic data can be obtained by clicking the state on a color-coded map.
  
• California Department of Education DataQuest
  Find facts (API reports, enrollments, etc.) about California schools and districts.
  
• California Statistical Abstract
  Compilation of data on social, economic, and physical aspects of the State. The contributor for each table is given at the bottom of the table and may be contacted for more details or an explanation of the data.
  
• ChildStats.gov
  Provides access to federal and state statistics and reports on children and their families, including: population and family characteristics, economic security, health, behavior and social environment, and education. Includes the annual Federal monitoring report on the status of the American children.
  
• CIA World Factbook
  Provides fundamental and factual reference material on a country or issue including current economic statistics and indicators by country including population, GDP, external debt and birth and death rates. Includes maps.
  
• County and City Data Book
  From the U.S. Census Bureau. Provides information on individual counties and cities (with population of 25,000 or more) in the United States. Data covers the following topical areas: age, agriculture, births, climate, crime, death, employment, housing, poverty, race, and more. Click on link for "online publication" to access data.
  
• FedStats
  Gateway to official statistics collected and published by more than 100 Federal agencies.
  
• Historical Statistics of the United States (HSUS)
  Comprehensive statistics and quantitative facts on US history. Coverage includes population, work and welfare, economics structure and economic sectors, and governance and international relations. Date coverage varies by subject with some data going back to 1790. Allows users to download tables in Excel or CSV; also download entire groups of tables as a zip file; create custom tables; merge columns from multiple tables to create custom tables, which can also be downloaded, printed, or graphed.
  
• National Center for Health Statistics (NCSH)
  The website for the National Center for Health Statistics, the nation's principal health statistics agency, compiling statistical information to guide actions and policies to improve the health.
  
• RAND State Statistics
  Statistics include: business & economics; population and demographics; education; community; health & socioeconomic; government finance; census; politics & public opinion. Also includes an online index to RAND public policy and research publications.
  
• State and County QuickFacts
  From the U.S. Census Bureau. Quick, easy access to facts about people, business and geography.
  

The police departments of most American urban areas make their crime statistics publicly available as crime maps. With these maps, you can search by location (address or area) or type of crime, to find out what crimes have been reported in a given time period. Usually, you can google the name of the city + "crime map" to find a crime map for that city, like this: atlanta crime map.

• Oakland Crimespotting (not a city government site, but the source of its data is the City of Oakland Police Dept)
• San Francisco Police Department Crime Maps
• California crime data from the CA Department of Justice (city, county, and statewide)
• United States crime data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (nationwide)
