About this Guide
This guide is for students in ARCHITECTURE 170A & 170B, An Historical Survey of Architecture and Urbanism. Most print materials listed here will be placed on the ARCHITECTURE 170 BOOK CART in the Environmental Design Library prior to the deadline for the first draft of your paper. (Those items are available for everyone in the class and cannot be checked out.)
Getting Started
Follow these steps to organize your research.
- Go to the Paper Topic tab for tips on choosing a topic.
- Define and Deconstruct Your Topic (see the Paper Topic tab).
- Go to the Citations tab to choose a style manual for your footnotes and bibliography.
- See the Basic Resources tab to find initial information about your paper topic.
- Refine Your Topic: Using the information you have gathered, determine if your research topic should be narrower or broader. You may need to search Basic Resources again using your new, focused topics and keywords.
- See the Searching Tips tab to find books for an in-depth discussion of your topic.
- Go to the Articles tab for resources containing current and retrospective information. Use Periodical Indexes to identify articles within periodical and newspaper titles.
The Architecture 170 Bibliography Assignment Tutorial is a step-by-step guide for creating your initial bibliography and takes approximately 90 minutes to complete. At the end of the tutorial you should have an initial bibliography ready for submission.
Connecting from Off Campus?
To remotely access resources that are UCB Only or UC Only, set up the proxy server on your mobile device.
Proxy Server Setup
After you make a one-time change in your web browser settings, the proxy server will ask you to log in with a CalNet ID or Library PIN when you click on the link to a licensed resource. See the setup instructions, FAQ, and Troubleshooting pages to configure your browser.
Your Paper Topic
Choose a topic.
Use the ARCHITECTURE 170 BOOK CART in the Environmental Design Library to browse general architecture histories, urban histories, images and plans to find a topic that appeals to you.
Define and deconstruct your topic. Plan your search.
Use the ARCH 170 EXERCISE to develop your topic.
- Write your research topic as a question, subject idea or thesis statement.
Example: What is unique about St. Paul's Cathedral in London?
- List the main concepts.

- List key words, phrases and synonyms to search (include people, places, styles, buildings).

architect = Sir Christopher Wren; name of place = St. Paul's; location = London
- Remember to include alternate spellings.
Example: Vatican or Vaticano; Saint or S. or St. or Sainte or Ste.

Citing Your Sources
A brief online guide to the main citation styles and a brief discussion on what constitutes plagiarism.
The Chicago Manual of Style
UCB Only Searchable, online version of the Chicago Manual of Style (15th edition). Also many print editions throughout the UCB libraries.
Citation Management Tools
These tools help you manage your research, collect and cite sources, and create bibliographies in a variety of citation styles. Each program has its strengths and weaknesses, but all are easier than managing citations manually!
- Zotero - free plug-in that works exclusively with the Firefox browser: keeps copies of what you find on the web, permits tagging, notation, full text searching of your library of resources, works with MS-Word, and has a free web backup service.
- RefWorks - free for UC Berkeley users. It allows you to create your own database by importing references and using them for footnotes and bibliographies. Use the RefWorks New User Form to sign up.
- EndNote - may be purchased from UC Berkeley's Scholar's Workstation.
It's always good to double-check the formatting—sometimes the software doesn't get it quite right.

- Citation software tutorials - Includes online tutorials created by the UC Berkeley Library for using bibliographic management software.
- The Library sometimes offers drop-in classes on RefWorks, EndNote, and Zotero.

Dictionaries
Dictionaries - for concepts, terminology, definitions, and to verify spelling. Specialized dictionaries give the history and illustrations of building elements.
General Histories and Surveys
General Histories and Surveys provide an overview and the context of a topic, with dates, locations, special sites, and the names of architects or designers. They usually include bibliographies.

Provides access to over 275,000 images digitized from primary sources and printed rarities in the collections of The New York Public Library, including vintage posters, rare prints and photographs, illustrated books, and printed ephemera. Search by broad topic such as "Turkey architecture."
RIBApix
The online image catalog of the Royal Institute of British Architects. Low resolution images available for free; higher quality images have a watermark but may be purchased for publication.
World architecture index: a guide to illustrations
Indexes illustrations of 7,200+ architectural works in standard books on world architecture (UC Berkeley call numbers are annotated in the front of the book). Lists the type of illustration to be found: interior or exterior views, plans, sections, and elevations.
