The Library actively collects and maintains a research level collection in support of the teaching and research of the faculty and students of the Spanish and Portuguese Studies Department. The collection offers resources in the languages, literatures, cultures of the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking world, also including Galician, Basque and Catalan materials. The collections support pluridisciplinary research and cover a wide geographical area. The study of these countries and cultures can be approached from a wide range of subjects. Frequently used collections for research include: Medieval Studies , Latin American Studies, Ethnic Studies (Chicano Studies collection), Linguistics, and Special Collections at the Bancroft Library.

The major part of the collection is housed in the Gardner (MAIN) Stacks, with additional materials in the library subject branches, such as the Environmental Design Library (city & urban planning, architecture), Music, etc. Manuscripts, archives, and rare materials are housed in the Bancroft Library.

Find dissertations by searching Proquest Dissertations and Theses (PQDT), which indexes graduate dissertations from over 1,000 North American, and selected European, graduate schools and universities from 1861 to the present. Dissertations published since 1980 include brief abstracts written by the authors and some feature 24-page excerpts. The database offers full text for most of the dissertations added since 1997 and some full text coverage for older graduate works.

HathiTrust
Pronounced "hah-tee", this cooperative system contains millions of books scanned from UC and other major research libraries, including those digitized by Google and the Internet Archive. Search on information about the book (such as author or title), or words in the text. Full text is available for items that are not protected by copyright. Items in the HathiTrust catalog can be grouped into collections and shared online. For details, see the FAQ page.

Google Book Search
Books on many subjects, including titles from the UC libraries, digitized in partnership with Google. Full text can be displayed only if the book is out of copyright (generally, published before 1923) or if the copyright holder has given permission.

Internet Archive: Text Archive
Several hundred thousand books in the public domain, from the Open Content Alliance (OCA). Includes many books from our collections.

UC Press E-Books Collection, 1982-2004
1,400 titles on a wide range of subjects from the University of California Press. Includes about 30% of UC Press books, both in and out of print. Books can be viewed but not downloaded.

  The Cervantes Project is composed of the Cervantes International Bibliography Online (CIBO), the Cervantes Digital Library which are electronic editions of Cervantes' complete works) and the Cervantes Digital Archive of Images (CDAI).
  
• Complutensian Digital Collection / Coleccion Digitale Complutense (CDC)
  Provides access to more than 70,000 documents including scientific articles, old books and engravings, and doctoral theses from the Universidad Complutense Matrid.
  
• Digital Scriptorium
  A growing image database of medieval and renaissance manuscripts that unites scattered resources from many institutions into an international tool for teaching and scholarly research. Among the participating institutions to this project are the Bancroft Library, the Robbins Collection, and the Hargrove Music Library at UC Berkeley, Columbia University, and the New York Public Library.
  
• Electronic Text Collections in Western European Literature
  Lists literary texts freely available on the Internet in Western European languages other than English. Languages included are: Catalan, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, Galician, German, Greek, Irish, Italian, Latin, Norwegian, Old Norse and Icelandic, Portuguese, Romanian, Provencal, Spanish, Swedish.

  Provides open access to more than 15 million digital objects, including film material, photos, paintings, sounds, maps, manuscripts, books, newspapers and archival papers from more than 1500 European institutions.
  
• Internet Medieval Sourcebook
  Provides access selected excerpts to sources particularly useful for the teaching of Medieval Studies. Also includes full-texts fo medieval sources and a section on ancient, medieval and Byzantine hagiographical sources.
  
• LIBRO: The Library of Iberian Resources Online
  Includes a number of basic texts and sources in translation focusing on Iberian history from the 5th to the 17th century. The list of texts included is based on recent but out-of-print university press monographs.
  
• Lletra (Catalan Literature Online)
  Includes the works of Catalan authors such as: Ausias March, Mrece Rodoreda, Quim Monzo, Ramon Llull, Jesus Moncada, Albert Sanchez Pinol, Carme Riera, Joan Brossa, etc. The site also serves as a gateway to other sites on Catalan literature.
  
• Teatro Espanol del Siglo de Oro
  Contains the full-text of more than 800 plays written by 16 Spanish dramatists of the 16th and 17th centuries. Dramatists included are: Lope de Vega, Calderon de la Barca, Agustin Moreto, etc.

Berkeley’s world-class education and research depend on the ready access offered by the Library to a comprehensive record of human knowledge, together with the latest discoveries in every field of learning.

From rare and precious manuscripts to thousands of titles used in day-to-day research, the University Library’s Spanish and Portuguese collection supports students and faculty in Berkeley’s academic departments and programs. The holdings range from core collections housed in the Doe/Moffitt Libraries to specialized research materials in our fourteen subject specialty libraries. Just as Berkeley’s academic programs consistently rank at the top among their peers worldwide, the Library's collections that support those departments are internationally renowned for their depth and breadth.

The University Library is seeking private support to maintain the excellence of its collections. The cost of building these collections has increased dramatically, due to spiraling book and journal costs, as well as to the declining value of the dollar. It is due, as well, to a burgeoning of new information - a dramatic rise in the number and specialization of journals, the availability of full text and searchable electronic versions of items previously held only in print, and the emergence of new genres of digital content.   

Financial support is very important to the future development and ongoing curation of the library's collections. Contributions provide funding for expensive resources, specialized equipment, conservation of rare books, and exhibits or special projects. Financial gifts may be unrestricted or support a specific library program, service, or collection. In addition to cash, the Library welcomes securities and other real or tangible property.

Endowments- Endowment funds may be established with a gift of $50,000 or more to support library collections, programs, projects or positions. These endowed funds provide the University Library, in perpetuity, with an annual income that ensures our collections and programs remain strong and vital regardless of the strength of state and campus budgetary support. Donors may choose to support specific programs, projects, or library materials in a discipline or area of the donor's choice. We encourage interested donors to contact us or the Library Development Office to discuss possible endowment opportunities.

Major Gifts - Significant contributions toward Library enhancements are welcomed and could include a recognition plaque or naming opportunities for improved areas, subject to campus approval procedures.

Memorial Gifts - Contributions given in memory or in honor of a person or to mark a special occasion are recognized with a bookplate and family members notified. For a gift of $1,000, a named memorial book fund can be established, and for gifts totaling $50,000 or more, a named memorial library endowment fund with its own special bookplate can be created.

Matching Gifts - Some firms match their employee's gifts to higher education. Ask your company's Matching Gifts Coordinator, or call 510/642-9377, and we will provide you with a list of companies with matching gift programs.

Planned Gifts - You may invest in the Library's future by including it in your estate plans without decreasing assets during your lifetime.

Bequests - The simplest method for a planned gift is to include the Library in your will. Bequests can take the form of cash, securities, or other property, and may be a specific sum or a stated percentage of the estate.

Trusts - A trust can be established to produce income for the donor or others during their lifetimes and ultimately provide future support for the Library. Cal's Gift Planning staff can provide assistance in determining an appropriate arrangement to meet your individual needs.

Gifts of scholarly materials and the results of research have historically represented a significant element in the development of Berkeley's outstanding research collections. We welcome individual gifts, but due to space and staff limitations, we must be judicious in accepting large contributions. Donations of recently published books are welcomed. New book purchases will be checked to ensure titles aren’t already on order.
