Berkeley Research Impact Initiative:
Advancing the Impact of UC Berkeley Research
The Berkeley Research Impact Initiative (BRII) supports faculty members, post-docs, and graduate students who want to make their journal articles free to all readers immediately upon publication.
BRII provides Berkeley authors reimbursement:
- up to $3000/article for open access fees for those publishing in full open access journals.
- up to $1500/article for paid access fees in hybrid journals (a hybrid journal is a traditional subscription-based journal that offers authors an option to pay an additional fee to make the article available to the public.)
- There is a $4500 limit in BRII funding per calendar year, per individual lab.
BRII subsidizes, in various degrees, fees charged to authors who select open access or paid access publication. The program also yields data that is currently being used to gauge faculty interest in — as well as the budgetary impacts of — these new modes of scholarly communication on the Berkeley campus.
