Getting started with ebrary

ebrary is a collection of over 50,000 ebooks in a wide range of subject areas. Access is available from all campus computers. UC Berkeley faculty, staff, and students can also access this resource from off campus via the Library Proxy Server or VPN (Virtual Private Network).

ebrary Features

• Browse for ebooks by subject area.
• Search by keyword across the full text of the collection.
• Print and copy limited portions of text from ebooks.
• Download limited portions or entire books with a free personal account.
• Bookmark, highlight, and take notes with a free personal account.

Using ebrary on your computer:

QuickView allows instant viewing of documents, works with every browser, and requires no installation. You can also print, copy, and use other advanced features through the InfoTools menu within QuickView. For these reasons, ebrary recommends using QuickView. It is also the only reader that works on the public computers in the library.

However, you may also want to try the ebrary Reader due to its better printing quality or text-to-speech functionality. If you choose to use the ebrary Reader, you should be prompted to install it the first time you click on the blue ebrary Reader button. If you have problems installing the reader, please consult the ebrary Knowledgebase article on Java-based Unity Reader Installation Issues. Please note that the ebrary Reader does not work on public computers in the library for security reasons.

Printing

Choose the Print option from the InfoTools menu to print a limited number of pages. Generally, you can choose to print the current chapter or specific page ranges, up to 60 pages per session. These restrictions may vary by publisher.

Because ebrary numbers every page in the ebook, the page number on the printed page may not match the consecutive page numbering applied by ebrary. When specifying pages to print, take care to use the consecutive page numbers, which appear in parentheses after the printed page number in each reader.

Downloading

Downloading requires that you sign in to your free personal account. Some ebrary ebooks may be downloaded in their entirety for temporary access on your computer or other supported devices. All ebrary ebooks allow you to download individual chapters or page ranges as a PDF, though the image quality is not as good as the ebooks downloaded in their entirety.

• Not all ebrary books can be downloaded
• Access to downloaded books and annotations is temporary (14 days)
• Only 10 ebrary books can be downloaded at any time
• Requires the free Adobe Digital Editions reader
• Not compatible with Linux or Kindle
