1. Extended winter closure

The Mathematics Statistics Library will be closed from December 18-January 9 due to scheduled maintenance on the Evans Hall heating system over the winter break. Library staff will check the after-hours book drop periodically during the closure so that you may continue to return books here. However, materials from our collection will not be available for pick-up or check out. We plan to reopen on Monday, January 10 with our intersession hours: 1-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. If conditions are favorable, we may decide to reopen earlier.

Other campus libraries will be open during the first week of January, and you can check Library Hours for details. Please contact with questions or comments about our closure.

2. MathSciNet improvements

In October, a number of enhancements and new features were implemented in MathSciNet:

  • The latest version uses MathJax to improve the display of mathematics in modern browsers.
  • Records now include direct links to series, books, and book chapters when digital object identifiers (DOI) are available.
  • Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics Ph.D. theses from ProQuest are now included. Clicking on the "Thesis" link in these records will take you to ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, where we have access to all the UC dissertations that are available online there.

3. New resource: Wiley series in probability and statistics

We recently purchased the Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics online. With this purchase, you can now access all the e-books currently available from this popular book series, some 170 titles covering the years 1973 to 2010. Links to individual books will eventually be loaded into OskiCat and the NextGen Melvyl, but in the meantime, you can access them directly from the Book Series home page. New titles will be considered for purchase as they are made available.

Access is available from all campus computers. UC Berkeley faculty, staff, and students can also access these e-books from off campus via the Library Proxy Server.

4. New retrodigitized collections: ICM proceedings and AMS journals

Two new collections of digitzed historical mathematics were recently announced:

  • ICM Proceedings: The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) proceedings have been digitized back to the first volume in 1893, and these ICM Proceedings 1893-2006 are now freely available online, courtesy of the International Mathematical Union.
  • AMS Research Journals Digital Archive: In August, the American Mathematical Society (AMS) announced a complete digital archive of its mathematical research journals. Over 34,000 articles are freely available from over 100 years of mathematical research in Journal of the AMS (1988-2005), Mathematics of Computation (1943-2005), Proceedings of the AMS (1950-2005), Transactions of the AMS (1900-2005), and Bulletin of the AMS (1891-2005). UC Berkeley also continues to have access to current issues based on our library subscriptions.

5. My ILL Requests launches

UC Berkeley users of Interlibrary Loan (ILL) can now view a list of their interlibrary borrowing requests online through My ILL Requests. Those who have successfully made an ILL request, either online or in person, can see:

  • A list of items they have requested, which can be sorted by due date, author, or title.
  • The status of each request (pending, received, returned, etc.)
  • The due date by which they must return the item.

There are options to cancel a request as well as request a renewal. My ILL Requests may be accessed via the Interlibrary Loan page or the Interlibrary Borrowing Service page. Off-campus users of our proxy server may be prompted for a CalNet ID; all users will need to log in with their UC Berkeley ID card number and Library PIN.
