UC Berkeley unregistered undergraduates or graduate students on filing fee status
You may apply to have your library privileges extended.
Proxy Borrowers for UC Berkeley faculty and academic staff
Proxy borrowers may check out library materials in the name of authorizing faculty or academic staff. The proxy borrower application form includes eligibility requirements and a statement of responsibility. The authorizing faculty or academic staff must complete and submit the online application that will be received by the Privileges Desk.
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL or LBL) staff
Your LBNL photo ID card serves as your library card for borrowing materials and for access to the Gardner (MAIN) Stacks, Moffitt, the Media Resources Center and other areas requiring a Cal ID. If you have a dual UCB appointment, continue to use your Cal 1 Card to access library services. Most LBNL borrowers have the same level of borrowing privilege as is given to campus staff, although LBNL scientists may present documentation in person to the Privileges Desk to have their patron record upgraded to faculty borrowing privilege status. LBNL longterm guests/visitors are no longer charged a per person fee for access to the library. Their privileges will expire on the end date of their visit as recorded in the LBNL Human Resource system. LBNL retirees need to present their UC Retirement Center card at the Privileges Desk to obtain a borrowing card.
Stanford University faculty, academic staff, and graduate students
Your Stanford library card gives you library access and borrowing privileges, and you are eligible for Research Library Cooperative Program (RLCP) privileges.
Students, faculty, and staff from other UC campuses
Students, your current UC ID and current semester's proof of registration are required to obtain borrowing privileges. Faculty and staff, your current UC ID and a departmental letter of introduction will allow you to establish or renew borrowing privileges. Apply for a Library card at the Privileges Desk or contact Privileges staff in advance by phone 510-642-3403 or e-mail privdesk@library.berkeley.edu, for additional information regarding required documentation.

Application and Privileges
All applicants must provide proof of California residence by presenting a current government-issued ID such as a driver's license or state issued ID. Applicants who use a PO BOX for mail will be obligated to provide proof of California residence address for record purposes. Payment for borrowing cards may be made by VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover Card, bank debit card, personal check or money order, made payable to "UC Regents". We cannot accept Cash for payment.
One-year and six-month Library cards grant borrowing privileges and access to the Gardner (MAIN) Stacks, Moffitt Library, and most subject specialty libraries, however, privileges do not extend to Interlibrary borrowing services, or access to course reserves. Access to special collections and services may be restricted. Cardholders may have a maximum of twenty books checked out at any given time. Note: UC Extension students who are concurrently enrolled in UC Berkeley are accorded the same privileges as UC Berkeley students.
Renewal of already existing borrowing card
All library card renewals require the user to bring in the original library card and a current California (CA) driver's license or ID card to the Privileges Desk during our open hours; although some extra documentation may be required for specific cohorts of borrowers.
UC Alumni members must also bring their current Alumni Association membership card.
K-12 public school teachers (CA) must also bring a letter on school letterhead, signed by your principal, confirming your full-time affiliation with your school, for the current year.
UC Extension, California State University and CA Community College students must also bring proof of current registration.
CSU, UC, UC Extension and Community College faculty and staff must present your Campus ID and a letter on school letterhead affirming full-time employment with your respective school, annually.
If your affiliation was not listed above and/or you have questions regarding documentation requirements, please contact the Privileges Desk (510) 642-3403 in advance of your visit.
Loan Periods, Renewals and My OskiCat
Loan periods and due dates vary among the campus libraries. It is the cardholder's responsibility to note the due dates for materials and to return or renew them by those dates. The "My OskiCat" link in OskiCat can provide a list of items you currently have checked out of the UC Berkeley Libraries. It is also the starting point for renewing materials. Please familiarize yourself with the circulation policies of each library from which you borrow.
Returning Materials
Return material to the circulation desk during library hours. After hours, return books to a library book drop. Refer to the owning library for information on returning non-book materials. Return interlibrary loan material to 133 Doe.
Return Receipts may be requested from a circulation desk for returned material. Materials damaged or incomplete should be brought immediately to the owning library circulation desk to discuss repair or replacement options that may be available. The Library does not keep a record of receipts issued.
Searches, Recalls and Holds
Search requests for materials not found on the shelf and not checked out may be placed at any circulation desk. Borrowers will be notified by e-mail when search requests have been located.
Via My OskiCat, recalls of items checked out by another borrower may be requested by Library cardholders with borrowing privileges. You will be notified by e-mail when the item is available to be picked up. Recalled items should be available within one week. When it is returned, the item will be put on hold. If more than one person has recalled it, these will be handled in the order the recalls were placed. If an item you have checked out is recalled, you must return it by the new due date.
E-Mail Notification
You will receive hold pickup, recall, overdue notices, bill warnings, and search notices, via e-mail.
UCB faculty, staff and students: update your email address in the CalNet Directory, in two places:
- Edit Person Information
- Edit Address Information
IMPORTANT: Do not update your information through My OskiCat; this information will be overwritten by updates to the CalNet Directory.
Library cardholders: update your email address via My OskiCat.
Overdue, Lost or Damaged Material
Library borrowers must return or renew items by their due date. When an item becomes overdue, borrowing privileges will be blocked until the item is returned. Some libraries charge a fine for overdue items. See: full details regarding billing, blocks and replacements.
UC Berkeley students who have owed the Library $200 or more for at least 30 days will also be blocked with the Registrar's Office. Students blocked by the Registrar's Office will not be able to obtain transcripts or register for classes. Blocks are removed after bills and fines have been paid at the Privileges Desk (Doe Library, floor 1).
If an item is damaged or lost, borrowers are liable for charges incurred to repair or replace the item. A borrower may replace lost or damaged materials with acceptable copies at the discretion of the lending library Circulation Manager. Approval must be attained from the lending library before procuring a replacement. The Library offers advice on how to find replacements for lost library books and serials.
Replacement costs ($150 default/book or the actual cost of the item, which ever is higher) and processing fees are charged for overdue materials that are not returned. Unpaid bills are forwarded to a collection agency. Direct all questions about bills, and blocked or revoked privileges to the Privileges Desk (Doe Library, floor 1). Staff may be also be contacted by phone, 510-642-3403, or e-mail privdesk@library.berkeley.edu.
Responsibilities of Borrowers
- Borrowers are responsible for library materials charged out to them until they are returned to the lending library.
- Borrowers are prohibited by Library policy from lending their library card to others.
- UC Berkeley students, faculty and staff are responsible for maintaining a current e-mail address in the CalNet Directory.
- Library cardholders are responsible for maintaining a current e-mail address in My OskiCat
- All borrowers are responsible for having a current physical address on file with the Library Privileges Desk.
Borrowers who abuse Library borrowing privileges may have their privileges suspended throughout the Library. Examples of abuse of library
borrowing privileges include repeatedly not returning materials on time, not paying replacement bills, not responding to recall notices, not returning library materials even after replacement bills have been issued, and mutilation or damage of library materials.
